Titanium is a metal with excellent strength, low density and a light weight. That makes it ideal for aerospace and medical applications. Because of its corrosion resistance, it is also perfect for marine environments and chemical processing.

Cutting process

Cutting titanium is a complex process. The metal is known for its high strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance. It requires sharp tools to minimise friction and prevent overheating. The burrs that form during the cutting process, can be removed with a grinding machine.

The right machine for processing titanium

Once the titanium is cut into sheets or parts, Timesavers comes into play. The Timesavers grinding machines take care of deburring and finishing titanium sheets. All imperfections are removed with precision. It is recommended to use a wet working machine with coolant.

Advice: Choose a grinding machine with belts for deburring and finishing the surface.

Tooling

Titanium is a tough metal. Possible tooling is a grinding wheel, but we prefer to use grinding belts. Grinding belts are less expensive and more durable. The belt can have a carbide grain, that stays sharp and resists wear. The high-quality abrasive belts of 3M are really important in processing titanium. With 3M’s innovative Precision Shaped Grain, every fracture of the grain turns into a sharp point. Ensuring a long lifetime and consistent results.

Advice: Use the 3M belts with Precision Shaped Grain for optimal results.

Dust extraction

There are potential hazards when grinding titanium. For that reason it is necessary to take health and safety precautions. The grinding dust of titanium is harmful to ones health if inhaled. And that is not all. The combustible dust can also ignite in certain conditions, creating a fire hazard. To maintain a clean workspace and a safe working environment, it is crucial to equip your machine with a dust extraction or filter unit.

Advice: Equip the machine with a dust extraction for safety reasons.
